In 1998 activate’s foundations were formed as a close corporation called ‘Johannesburg Studio for Architecture’(JSA). During the first 2 years the practice underwent a number of important changes consolidating in 2000 as an established small practice of 2 partners (Edward Brooks and Michael Magner), a couple of staff and the activate brand.

In 2004 Reon van der Wiel joined activate as a qualified architect and in 2007 became a partner in the practice.

In 2009 the activate was converted to a Pty Company to better accommodate the anticipated growth of the firm.

With a passion for architecture, good design and attention to detail, the firm has grown steadily to take on a variety of larger projects for a broad spectrum of private, institutional and commercial clients.
