architecture - competition entry
At this point in time it is crucial for schools to redefine and express in their design the role buildings can play in minimizing the consumption of energy and natural resources, leading by example.
The competition was a three stage process. Five practices were invited to compete; after the first presentation, Activate and MRA were short listed. Each practice underwent two further design stages involving presentations and reviews. Environmental issues were carefully considered, The school village has been integrated with existing trees, and the architectural envelope has high thermal mass performance being made from turf/veld covered concrete roofs and brick cavity walls and making use of natural ventilation. Generous connection to courtyards provides lots of natural light while sunscreens protect glassing from direct sun. A grey water recycling system has been introduced, along with a stormwater retention system. Low energy lighting will be used throughout the school, and energy-efficient solar water heating systems will harness the abundant solar energy found in the North West Province. |
