Description New house on virgin land
Locatin The veld, South Africa
Client: Wiets and Juanita Marais
Size400m2

architecture - The Veld House Situated on a game farm, the guiding idea behind the Veld House is that the building becomes part of the bushveld, rather than an object perched on top of the landscape.

The intention is to create an interwoven presence of animals in nature with human endeavour.

The architecture of the house forms part of a journey that our practice continues to explore; to establish an architecture that is modern and South African, rooted in its own place and responding to the climate (highveld), the landscape (indigenous veld), and of course the users of the spaces.

Raw materials and finishes are used throughout the building which allows the structure to be honest, wholesome and nurturing to its inhabitants. All the stone is from the site itself, and no ground is imported. A basement garage is excavated and the ground recycled to form wedge-shaped mounds into which the house is built.
